The London Borough of Newham is a North London borough (North East London sub-region) forming part of Outer London, which itself is part of the Ceremonial County of Greater London. The borough was formed 1st April, 1965 by merging the county borough of West Ham with the Essex county borough of East Ham. The London Borough of Newham's administrative headquarters are in East Ham and local postcodes include E & IG. Newham's council is led by a directly elected mayor, which is unlike most other English districts. The University of East London has two campuses in Newham, namely the Stratford Campus and the Docklands Campus
Upton Park forms part of the London Borough of Newham and is home to West Ham United Football Club. The area is centred aroung Green Street, which is a former tramway which divided the old Essex County Boroughs of East Ham and West Ham.
The Royal Victoria Dock also forms part of the London Borough of Newham and is also part of London's Docklands. The Royal Victoria Dock is the largest of three docks in East London's Royal Docks. The docks were opened Opened in 1855 on an uninhabited area of the Plaistow Marshes. Home of the popular wedding fair, The Royal Victoria Dock is dominated by the ExCeL Exhibition Centre, which was opened in 2000.
