The London Borough of Waltham Forest is a North London borough (North East London sub-region) forming part of Outer London, which itself is part of the Ceremonial County of Greater London. The borough was formed 1st April, 1965 by merging the former area of the Municipal Borough of Chingford, Municipal Borough of Walthamstow and Municipal Borough of Leyton (all transferred to Greater London from Essex). The London Borough of Waltham Forest's administrative headquarters are in Walthamstow and local postcodes include E & IG. The borough's name originates from Epping Forest. The London Borough of Waltham Forest is twinned with Saint-Mandé (France) and Wandsbeck (Germany).
Chingford forms part of the London Borough of Waltham Forest, and is located close to the border with Essex. Epping Forest is to the north and Enfield to the west. The name 'Chingford is thought to derive from the ford in the river Ching. However 'Ching' may refer to king. in refernence to the King's River. All Saints' Church in Chingford Mount dates to the 12th century. It was restored in 1929 using funds donated by Miss Boothby Heathcote. In 1839, Robert Boothby Heathcote built Chingford's Friday Hill House in Simmons Lane. At the bottom of Friday Hill can be seen Pimp Hall Dovecote.
