The London Borough of Bexley is a South London borough (South East London sub-region) forming part of Outer London, which itself is part of the Ceremonial County of Greater London. The borough of Bexley was formed 1st April, 1965 by merging the Municipal Boroughs of Bexley and Erith, Crayford Urban District and part of Chislehurst and Sidcup Urban District. The borough's administrative headquaters are at Broadway, Bexleyheath and the borough of Bexley is the 7th largest out of the 32 London boroughs.
Bexley town forms part of the London Borough of Bexley in Greater London and is located on the banks of the river Cray, south of Watling Street, a Roman Road, which joined London and Dover. Parts of Bexley's St. Mary's Church date back to the twelfth century. According to the Domesday Book there was an earlier church on the site. In 1878 Bexley's Grade II listed St. John's Church was founded as a proprietary chapel of St. Mary's
Development of Bexleyheath as a London suburb was furthered by the development of the Bexleyheath Line in the 1880s. The building of Bexleyheath's parish church, Christ Church, was finished in 1877 and Bexley Heath windmill was one of the few building in the area in the nineteenth century.
