The London Borough of Havering is a North London borough (North East London sub-region) forming part of Outer London, which itself is part of the Ceremonial County of Greater London. The borough was formed 1st April, 1965 by merging the former area of the Municipal Borough of Romford and Hornchurch Urban District (which had been transferred to Greater London from Essex in 1963) The London Borough of Havering's administrative headquarters are at Main Road in Romford and the local postcode is RM. The borough's name originates from the 'Royal Liberty of Havering', which covered a similar area to modern day Havering. This region, as a name, ceased to exist in 1892.
