The London Borough of Enfield is a North London borough (North London sub-region) forming part of Outer London, which itself is part of the Ceremonial County of Greater London. The borough was formed 1st April, 1965 by merging the former area of the Municipal Borough of Southgate, the Municipal Borough of Edmonton and the Municipal Borough of Enfield. The London Borough of Enfield's administrative headquarters at Civic Centre, Silver Street in Enfield Town and local postcodes include EN & N. The London Borough of Enfield is the most northerly borough in Greater London.
The name 'Enfield' comes from the Anglo-Saxon 'Eanafeld', which means 'open land for lambs' or 'open land belonging to a man called Eana'. The town of Enfield was known as 'Enefelde' at the time of the Domesday Book. St Andrew's is Enfield's parish church, parts of which date to the thirteenth century. The nave, north aisle, choir and tower are late fourteenth century and other parts date to the sixteenth century and ninteenth century. The town had a priest in the eleventh century who probably resided at St Andrew's Church. Enfield had a sixteenth century manor house known as Enfield Palace.
