The London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham is a North London borough (West London sub-region) forming part of Inner London, which itself is part of the Ceremonial County of Greater London. The borough was formed 1st April, 1965 by merging the Metropolitan Borough of Hammersmith and the Metropolitan Borough of Fulham. The London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham's administrative headquaters are in King Street, Hammersmith and local postcodes include NW10, W6, W12 & SW6. The Olympic Games were hosted in the borough's White City in 1908 and Hammersmith Tow Hall is home to a popular vintage wedding fair.
The town of Hammersmith is the urban centre of borough and is London's main centre for the Polish community. Hammersmith has excellent communications, being on the route of the A4 leading out of London towards the M4 motorway and Heathrow Airport, and is linked to Barnes in the southwest by Hammersmith Bridge. The town appears in Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens, as the home of the Pocket family. The William Morris Society Museum is based at Kelmscott House in Hammersmith.
