The London Borough of Tower Hamlets is a North London borough (North East London sub-region) forming part of Inner London, which itself is part of the Ceremonial County of Greater London. The borough was formed 1st April, 1965 by merging the former metropolitan boroughs of Bethnal Green, Poplar and Stepney. The London Borough of Tower Hamlets's administrative headquarters are at Clove Crescent, Blackwall and the local postcode is E. Tower Hamlets contains much of London's tradional 'East End' and also Docklands
St Katherine Docks forms part of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and is also part of London's Docklands. St Katherine Docks was once part of the Port of London and took its name from the twelfth century former hospital of St Katharine's by the Tower of London. The docks were officially opened on 25 October 1828
Also forming part of the borough is Cambridge Heath, situated between Bethnal Green and Hackney. As early as 1275 a reference is made to 'Camprichthesheth', with at least one house on the site. The area at this time was common heath land. Patriot Square in Cambridge Heath is the location of the former Bethnall Green Town Hall, where a popular wedding fair takes place.
