The London Borough of Westminster is a North London borough (West London sub-region) forming part of Inner London, which itself is part of the Ceremonial County of Greater London. The borough is also allowed (by royal charter) to use the name 'City of Westminster'. The borough was formed 1st April, 1965 by merging the metropolitan boroughs of St Marylebone, Paddington and the Metropolitan Borough of Westminster. The London Borough of Westminster's administrative headquarters are at City Hall in Victoria Street and local postcodes include NW, SW & WC. The borough is the 8th smallest of the 32 London boroughs. The London Borough of Westminster has a number of famous parks including Green Park, Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, Regent's Park and St. James's Park. The area is known for its historic attractions including Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and Westminster Cathedral. Westminster derives its name from the church of 'West Minster' to the west of St Paul's.
Mayfair forms part of the London Borough of Westminster and is named after the annual 2 week long 'May Fair' that happened on the site that is today's Shepherd Market. The fair began in the seventeenth century. Much of Mayfair is owned by Dukes of Westminster, the Grosvenor family and the Rothschild family
Also forming part of the borough is Paddington which historically was a metropolitan borough and also part of Middlesex. In 1847, Isambard Kingdom Brunel's Paddington station was opened. Micheal Bond's fictional children's character, Paddington Bear was found at Paddington Staion by the Brown family, with a message reading 'Please look after this bear'.
